Respect for Diversity

Having an environment where the respect for diversity of the children and the adults is imperative for a vibrant learning space. When there is a respectful environment, then both the students and adults will feel safe and comfortable and will be able to teach and learn to the best of their ability.

Diversity includes ethnicity, language, religion, socio-economic background and gender identify.  When there is respect for these areas we can think about equality, equity, diversity and inclusion (Watts, 2022).  When all these factors are taken into account then the learning environment will be safe for students.

To ensure that there is respect for diversity, teachers should be setting clear expectations around behaviour and make it known and demonstrate that everyone is treated fairly and equitably (Watts, 2022).  Whenever there are interactions that use discriminatory behaviour and language, the teacher should address it and not disregard it as banter because it would make the learning environment less safe.

The respect for diversity means creating an inclusive culture and this can be shown in many ways.  For example, there could be 2SLGBTQ+ clubs, the recognition of religious and cultural events, etc.  Other cultures should be included in readings and materials in classes.  Students should never be singled out.

I grew up as a visible minority in a very homogenous neighbourhood.  This often made me feel less included and different.  During Chinese New Year, one of my elementary teachers asked me in front of the class how my family celebrated, and I found this to be very embarrassing because all I wanted was to fit in.  Alternately, a way in which a felt included was in my high school English class.  We read a book about a Chinese-American immigrant family and so many passages in that book really make me feel heard.

Creating a respectful environment that includes the diversity of our students is challenging, but well worth it to create a vibrant learning space.
